Listen to these new contenders for the domain name world: -.coffee, .sport, .travel, or a non-English, or even non-Latin, script does this sound like a domain name we really need?

Dot-Music, Dot-Sport and (Security Experts Hope) Dot-Secure

Will the new Internet with hundreds of new top-level domain names be more secure or a wild free for all?

Until now, the Web has been organized into 22 familiar top-level domains — those two or three letters that come after the period — like .com, .org, .net, .gov and so on. But now, with the Internet crunched for space, the body that governs the domain name system, the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers, or Icann, is about to throw open the floodgates to thousands of new top-level domains.

Icann started accepting applications for new domains in January and will announce the winners this year. One year from now, you might find yourself browsing a site that ends in .coffee, .sport, .travel, or a non-English, or even non-Latin, script. Icann has already received 2,100 applications from 1,300 applicants, quadruple the number of applications expected.

The expansion has been controversial to say the least. Rod Beckstrom, Icann’s departing president, praised the change as a “new domain name system revolution.” But others have predicted World War Web.

OH great just what we all need more domain name extentions, that nobody really cares to learn.

The loudest critics have been security specialists who paint a frightening, Wild West landscape rife with turf wars between cybersquatters and companies, as well as hackers who can more easily game the system.

and it is not without its problems being online eother read on:

The application process itself has already been a bit of a disaster. Icann had to pull its application site off line on April 12 after a bug made it possible for applicants to view other applications (no small blunder when you consider that it costs each applicant $185,000 to apply).

we have domains that expire everyday and are NOT pick or renewed, why do we need more ext.???

Google has seized over 750 domain names from a cybersquatter who used them to drive traffic to a series of "gay interest" websites and now wants Google's trademark cancelled.

The company has won a complaint covering 763 domains that all included the word "google" followed by the name of another company, keyword or celebrity, which it called "one of the most aggressive campaigns of domain name infringement that [Google] has ever encountered."

Google is now the proud owner of sites including googletranny.com, googlehonda.com, googlethepiratebay.com, googlegayfacebook.com, googleprophetmuhammad.com, googlekellyclarkson.com and far too many more to mention.

The complaint was filed in March with the US National Arbitration Forum under ICANN's Uniform Domain Name Dispute Resolution Policy.

According to the NAF decision, these domains all pointed visitors to the adults-only website tgn.xxx, currently a "Coming Soon" page promising a "Gay Network".

Google took this to mean that the squatter, New York-based Chris Gillespie, intended to exploit its good name to promote gay porn, but Gillespie said in his defence that he only redirected the domains to the .xxx site in order to measure the traffic they received.
